Today I want to talk about a new TV serie that I started to watch and that I’m totally falling in love it. Insecure (HBO – 2016) talks about the life experiences of a black woman of our time, her insecurities, her professional and personal doubts and of course, relationships.
Created by Issa Rae (who also plays the part of Issa Dee in the tv serie), she used her autobiography The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl as the base for her TV shoe. Graduated from Stanford University, Issa has directed music videos, games and also her own web serie. This is one creative and powerful young black artist and I’m proud to see her getting her space.
After the first episode I was hooked. Even though I’m in a different time in my life, I sympathize with moments from my own “younger” self. There’s no denying that we all have been through moments like Issa, like being confused about where her relationship is going or when her best friend, Molly doesn’t understand why it’s so hard to find a guy that wants the same as her. I loved to see how Issa portraits her fears and insecurities.
The majority of the cast is of black actors (yes!), so I can see why some people may think the show could not appeal to the general public, but the show deals with universal things that affects all of us, regardless of our skin color.
So, if you have HBO, I totally recommend you put this Insecure on your watch-list. It has humor without being silly, it’s very relevant and the soundtrack is awesome. Solange Knowles is the music consultant for the show, so you know your ears will be happy.
Take care, see you on my next post.
