I’m currently enjoying my vacation in Brazil, but as soon as I’m back home I want to see the movie Queen of Katwe, since I have been hearing many good thing about it and has one of my favorite actor, Lupita Nyong’o.
Based on the book by Tim Crothers, The Queen of Katwe: A Story of Life, Chess, and One Extraordinary Girl’s Dream of Becoming a Grandmaster, where the author tells the story of a girl that wanted to become a grandmaster.
Phiona Mutesi, a girl from the slum Kampala, in Katwe, Ugande, who lost her father when she was only 3, and short after lost her sister. At age 9 she joined a club created by the missionary Robert Katende, where he taught children how to play chess. Phiona becomes fascinated with the game and with the guidance of Katende, reaches the top of the class and starts winning in tournaments.
The movie is direct by the always excellent Mira Nair and the cast has the already mentioned Lupita Nyong’o, David Oyelowo and Madina Nalwanga, among others.
I can’t wait to see it!
